- 1). Measure all four sides of the door or window opening where the weatherstripping will be installed. Add one inch to each measurement to give yourself some excess to work with.
- 2). Clean the walls around the opening. Dry the area with a soft cloth. Make sure the surface is completely dry before attempting to install your weatherstripping.
- 3). Purchase the appropriate type of weatherstripping for your project. Felt and foam weatherstripping are the least expensive and easiest to install but will need to be replaced every three or four years. Metal weatherstripping is more durable and comes in various styles. Some metal weatherstripping comes with an adhesive backing for quick installation, while other types require you to clip or nail the strips onto the door or window frame.
- 4). Follow the instructions on the weatherstripping package to attach it to the door or window opening. Cut the pieces of weatherstripping according to your measurements from Step 2. If you are installing metal-backed weatherstripping, you may need to use tin snips to cut the material. The installation method will vary based on the type of weatherstripping you use. For adhesive-backed weatherstripping, simply pull off the strip on the back to expose the adhesive and press the strip onto the wall. Metal weatherstripping usually comes with a package of small nails and a nail set to drive them into the wall. Do not use a regular hammer as this can bend the weatherstripping and create gaps in the seal.
- 5). Trim the ends of the weatherstripping so the corners fit together with no overlap. Open and close the door or window several times to make sure the weatherstripping does not interfere with its movement. If there is a problem, trim the weatherstripping and test the door or window again until you are satisfied.
