Most Aromatic Indoor Plants

• There are many varieties of indoor plants that are highly aromatic. These houseplants are relatively easy to grow and brighten up any room. Scented geraniums, lavender and orchids are a few popular choices of fragrant flowering plants. The following varieties also fall into this category and should be considered when planning an indoor garden.
  
  

Jasmine

• Jasmine will grow equally well in a pot or hanging basket. Native to China, this plant produces dark green leaves with pink buds that transform into dainty white flowers. All jasmine plants are highly fragrant and sweet smelling.
  
  Jasmine plants grow best in cooler temperatures, of approximately 65°. They prefer a humid atmosphere as well. They will grow in warmer surroundings, but typically will not bloom. For a more interesting look, vines can be trained to follow a wire topiary form. For fuller looking plants, frequently pinch off new shoots.
  
  In the right growing conditions, it is possible for Jasmine to bloom year-round. Fertilizing these plants every three to four weeks will help to ensure a longer blooming period. Artificial light also helps, in some cases.
  
  

Gardenias

• The Gardenia is highly aromatic and a good plant choice for somewhat experienced gardeners. Gardenias produce large white flowers and glossy green leaves. Gardenias normally bloom from late spring to the middle of summer. They do well in large pots. Some varieties of this plant can grow as tall as six feet.
  
  These plants prefer light. When grown indoors, gardenias should be exposed to as much sunlight as possible. Extra artificial light is almost always beneficial. Gardenias thrive in humid conditions, but grow adequately and any temperature above 50°.
  
  When watering these plants, use water that has been allowed to reach room temperature. Gardenias do best when soil is evenly moist to the touch. Do not over water.
  
  

Hoya

• Hoyas, sometimes referred to as wax flowers, are a good choice for novice gardeners because they are difficult to kill. They grow just as well inside as they do outdoors. These plants produce pink and white star shaped flowers and thick glossy leaves. Because they are shaped so perfectly, some people mistake them for artificial flowers. However, their powerful fragrance indicates otherwise.
  
  It is not uncommon for this vine-like plant to reach lengths of 10 to 20 feet. They tend to do best in smaller pots, when somewhat root bound. Hoyas don't require a great deal of water. Water only when top layer of soil feels dry to the touch. Use care when moving plants that are flowering. This motion may cause blooms to fall off.
