How Do I Anchor My Pergola?

Building Code

• Pergola is considered a permanent structure on your property so you want to make sure you are checking and complying with all building codes in your area. Even if your local codes are fairly relaxed, you want to make sure you secure the pergola deep enough into the ground to be below the frost line in your area and hold the pergola in place in the event of high winds.
  
  

Anchors

• Concrete will provide the most secure and stable foundation footings for your anchors. Galvanized steel is a good anchor to place into the footing. Dig holes deep enough to get below the frost line and wide enough to allow the posts, anchor and cement to sit comfortably in the hole.
  
  Pour cement so that it rises above the hole and is rounded at the top, allowing water to trickle off the footing. Secure the anchor by pushing it down into the cement with the wood post in place, ready to dry in the position in which it must stand.
  
  

Other Methods

• You can use other methods to secure your pergola and anchor it in place. Place the posts down far enough to bolt into the joists under a patio or deck. You can secure metal brackets in place and place the post in it. This method does not withstand harsh elements and can lead to anchor failure.
