Alternative to Slab Granite Edge Profiles
- Basic or standard granite edging profiles are those you find most often on prefinished commercial products, in builder spec homes and for thinner slabs of granite. These common edge profiles include straight edges and rounded edges on a single piece of granite but no compound or multiplaned cuts or grinding. In this family of edges are: the straight edge, quarter round on the top edge, quarter and half beveled top edge and the half and demi rounded bullnose.
- Designer cuts and compound profile configurations use a combination of directional cutting and grinding to make a more complex or deeper edge profile on a single piece of granite. Some of these use top cuts to make the lower edge of the granite protrude while others use reverse cuts to make the top edge protrude and others create a symmetrical effect. In this family of edging profiles are: the ogee, cove ogee, ogee bullnose, waterfall with a cascade cut effect, dupont, cove dupont, stair tread, platner, quarter-round top and bottom and the full bullnose.
- Compound granite edge profiles use two or more pieces of granite to build an edge profile that is larger or more detailed than the size and thickness of the granite slab would naturally provide. The added pieces are epoxied or otherwise glued into place either before or after cutting and grinding, depending on the manufacturing and installation process. You can combine portions of other edge designs to make a distinctive style, but there are a few more commonly used combinations that showcase this technique which include: a two-pieced full bullnose, a two-pieced mitre edge, an ogee on top with a full bullnose below, two-piece half bevel and either an ogee or dupont cut over a straight edge.
