- 1). Rent or purchase a drain snake, also known as an auger. Snakes may come in various sizes, but a snake with at least 50 feet of line should do the job. You can find augers at hardware and plumbing stores.
- 2). Take off the grate or strainer that covers the drain. If it is locked down, use a screwdriver to unfasten each screw. If there is a clean-out plug, remove it with a wrench by turning it in a leftward or counterclockwise motion.
- 3). Insert the snake cable into the drain pipe until you encounter resistance. When you feel this resistance, turn the cable clockwise and back out a little. Repeat this action as it will clear away blocks one at a time.
- 4). Pour hot water down the drain periodically as you are working to help flush out remaining debris. This action will also let you know when you have cleaned enough because the water will start to drain smoothly and quickly.
- 5). Scrub the clean-out plug and drain cover before replacing them. If the cover was originally screwed in, remember to replace the screws and secure them tightly.
- 6). Wash your hands thoroughly or bathe immediately after cleaning your basement drain. You may have come into contact with a lot of dirt, soap scum and bacteria.
