How to Install an Old Work Ceiling Box

    • 1). Place the open end of the old work box against the ceiling and center it over the original hole if there is one. If there is no existing hole, simply place the box where you plan to install it.

    • 2). Trace around the old work box with a pencil to create an outline on the ceiling. Draw a second circle approximately ½ inch inside the first circle you scribed onto the ceiling. This second circle is the important one for this task.

    • 3). Cut a hole into the ceiling with a keyhole saw. Follow the second circle as the first circle marks the outside edge of the box. If you use the first circle, the box will slip too far into the ceiling.

    • 4). Place the old work box into the hole. It will only go in approximately halfway due to the two plastic tabs mounted to screws that extend through the lip on the open end of the box. The tabs rotate to lock the old work box to the ceiling. Mark the tabs onto the ceiling, and then remove enough drywall with the keyhole saw to seat the box completely in the ceiling so the lip on the open end rests against the ceiling. Remove the box from the ceiling.

    • 5). Pull the electrical wires through the new hole in the ceiling, and then pull them through the wire slot on the closed end of the old work box.

    • 6). Slide the old work box into the hole until the lip butts up against the ceiling.

    • 7). Turn the screws located on the face of the lip to tighten the tabs on the side against the backside of the ceiling.
