Layout Blinds - What to Look For in a Quality Goose Hunting Blind
A quality layout blind is as important to the hunt as decoys and firearms.
Layout blinds come in a few styles but all are based on the same basic principle.
They are low-profile coffin-style enclosure that allow the hunter to lay flat on his back and peer through a screen to watch geese approach.
Most feature two doors that can be pushed open when the hunter sits up to shoot, while others have a hinged lid that flips back to allow the hunter to shoot.
Layout blind construction can vary a great deal depending upon the quality of the blind.
Look for blinds that provide lightweight metal tubing for the frame so that they are light to carry into the field.
Some blinds, like the Finisher blinds, will fold a couple of times to make the blind compact and easy to pack and haul.
Larger blinds will generally fold in half to allow the hunter to carry the blind like a backpack, or ride flat on the back of a four-wheeler.
Some layout blinds are fully framed and have a bit higher profile to accommodate larger hunters.
These tend to have a bit of a higher profile, but provide plenty of space and support for the big guy.
Look for blinds that feature a comfortable back rest.
You will spend a great deal of time lying on the ground, so you want a reasonable amount of support.
Look for a blind that uses a good camo pattern to provide a nice base from which to conceal your blind in the field.
The layout blind should also feature loops all over the outer cloth covering that allow the hunter to stubble the blind with materials that are natural to the area in which the blind is placed.
