Do-It-Yourself Eye Mask
- 1). Measure around the back of your head, from the outside edge of one eye, to the outside edge of your other eye. Subtract 1 inch from this measurement so the strap can stretch. Measure and cut a piece of smooth elastic ribbon to use as the strap that will hold your eye mask in place. Set it aside.
- 2). Lay a piece of paper down on your table and place a pair of sunglasses, lenses down, on the paper and trace the shape of the front of the glasses with a pencil. This will give you the general shape for your eye mask and help you make sure that both sides are symmetrical. Measure about 2 inches away from the line you traced and draw another line around the original, since you want your eye mask to be larger than the sunglasses. Cut the shape out to use as a stencil.
- 3). Place right-side-up on a table or work surface the piece of fabric that will be the front. Smooth it out. Place the piece of fabric that will lie against your eyes on top with the right side (the side that will be facing out) facing down. On top of that, lay your interfacing fabric and pin all layers together with straight pins. The fabric you use should be a smooth, soft material that can breathe, like cotton with a high thread count. You can also use a satiny material. The interfacing should be a thicker, dark material to effectively block out the light.
- 4). Place the stencil down on the three pieces of fabric and trace around the edges. Cut out the shape with scissors. Place the elastic strap on top so that the ends stick out slightly from the sides of the eye mask and the rest of it is folded on top. Line the edges with straight pins all the way around, about 1/2 inch in, to make sure the edges stay aligned as you work.
- 5). Sew the edges of the fabric 1/8 of an inch from the edge and leave a 1-inch-wide opening at the bottom (where it will lie against your nose). You can do this by hand or with a sewing machine, using a regular straight stitch. Remove the pins when you are finished.
- 6). Turn the eye mask right-side-out through the 1-inch opening you left in the bottom. The right sides of the fabric are now facing out, the interfacing is inside the mask and the strap is outside. Sew the opening shut as close to the edges as you can to make the stitches look neat. Steam iron the eye mask a little to press the folds in the fabric. Enjoy your eye mask and get some rest.
