How to Level a Door Frame
- 1). Lift the door frame into the opening. Hold the door closed if your frame is installed with a pre-hung door. Position the frame so that it is centered in the opening.
- 2). Insert a wooden shim next to the top hinge, or approximately 5 inches down from the top of the frame if there is no pre-hung door, between the frame and the rough opening. Hold a level against the door frame and adjust the shim until the door is level. Hammer a finishing nail through the frame, into the shim and rough opening.
- 3). Repeat the previous step with the middle and bottom hinge. If there is no door installed to give you reference points, the bottom shim should be placed approximately 11 inches up from the bottom of the frame and the middle shim should be centered between the top and bottom shims.
- 4). Move to the opposite side of the door. Place a shim between the frame and the rough opening at approximately the same height as the top shim on the other side of the door. Hold a level against the door frame and adjust the shim to level the door. Hammer a finishing nail through the frame to secure it. Repeat with the middle and bottom shims.
- 5). Close the door, if you have a pre-hung door frame. Check that the reveal between the door and frame is about 1/4-inch and is even down the entire length of the door. Score each shim flush with the surface of the door frame using a utility knife. Bend the shim back and forth to break it along the scored line.
