How to Caulk a Damper
- 1). Place a tube of silicone caulk into the drop-in caulk gun.
- 2). Cut the nozzle of the silicone caulk tube on a 45-degree angle with a 3/16th inch wide opening in the nozzle's interior tube with the utility knife.
- 3). Use a clean rag to wipe down the inside surface of the ductwork and damper flange to remove dust and debris from the area. Dust and dirt will interfere with the application of the silicone caulk.
- 4). Place the tip of the nozzle at one corner of the area where the damper flange contacts the ductwork.
- 5). Gently squeeze the handle of the caulk gun to start the flow of silicone caulk.
- 6). Run a continuous bead of caulking around the entire damper flange.
- 7). Wet your finger in the bowl of clean water.
- 8). Run your wet finger around the bead of silicone that you ran around the damper in Step 6. Wet your finger frequently to keep the silicone from sticking to your finger as you smooth the bead of silicone.
- 9). Clean your finger with a clean dry rag.

Inspect the bead of caulk to ensure that you have completely covered the seam area between the damper flange and the surface of the ductwork. Apply additional caulk to the seam in areas where you notice any voids in the caulk.
