How to Repair Major Drywall Peeling

104 9
    • 1). Use a drywall knife to scrape off the existing plaster where it's peeling, enough to get at the drywall tape under it. Pull the tape off slowly, taking the rest of the plaster with it so the whole seam is completely exposed. Scrape away the remaining plaster.

    • 2). Press drywall mesh tape over the seam from end to end.

    • 3). Apply joint compound over the drywall tape with a drywall knife. Make it cover the tape line completely, so the seam is about 4 inches wide. Make it smooth and flat.

    • 4). Let the joint compound dry for eight hours. Scrape a drywall knife over the dried compound to knock off any raised areas.

    • 5). Spread a second layer of compound over the seam. Make it about 6 inches wide and get it flat and smooth.

    • 6). Let the second layer set. Scrape it flat and spread on a third coat of compound, making it 8 to 10 inches wide.

    • 7). Let the third layer set 12 hours. Sand it flat and smooth with a drywall sander. The wall is now ready for repainting.
