How to Make Your Own Classroom Storyboard

    • 1). Create a basic worksheet with six to nine squares of equal size. These squares can be drawn using a ruler and pencil, then copied, or created in a word processor by inserting squares on a blank page.

    • 2). Give the students a prompt for their first storyboards. Give them the beginning of the story and the ending, allowing them to fill in the details themselves. You can do this with instructions before the lesson, or by filling in the first and last boxes. For younger students, this can be simplified by having them try to retell the events of a story you read to them.

    • 3). Instruct the children to create a description of each panel in the storyboard. The descriptions link the activity back to writing, by helping the students practice putting events into words.

    • 4). Create a large storyboard at the front of the classroom. In the preproduction phase of creating a movie or show for television, storyboards are put on large walls with the production crew of writers and directors in attendance to rework a script and arrange events of the story. Many DVDs include "Making Of" segments that include "animatics," which are scenes from the film replaced with storyboard images. These animatic segments can be used to demonstrate to your students how this process works professionally.

    • 5). Use the large-scale board to create a storyboard with your entire class. Create a scenario beforehand and ask the students to help you trim and edit the story. Students can cut out and move scenes around to change the presentation of the story. This exercise helps students learn editing skills that can be used when writing short stories, and even essays, by making them think critically about events and the way that they interrelate with one another.
