How to Make a Simple Bookshelf
- 1). Run a stud finder along the wall in the area you'll install the bookshelf. Wall studs are spaced 16 inches apart according to standard building practices, so account for this when deciding on the length of the bookshelf.
- 2). Draw a level line at the height you want the shelf and mark the position of the wall studs on the line, using a pencil.
- 3). Position shelf brackets on each stud point on the level line and drill them into the wall with the drywall screws through each screw hole on the bracket.
- 4). Sand the shelf top, then paint or varnish it. Use long, even strokes of the paintbrush going with the grain of the wood. Leave to dry.
- 5). Position the shelf top over the top of the brackets and screw the shelf top to the brackets through the screw holes on the arm of the shelf bracket into the underside of the shelf top.
- 6). Place a book end on either end of the bookshelf.
