How to Preserve Wood Paneling

    • 1). Set up a routine cleaning schedule for your wood paneling. This is the best way to preserve wood in the long term. First use a soft cloth to dust the paneling. Then, with your vacuum cleaner, fit the extension wand with the soft brush attachment. Or you can find special wall dusters with extension poles that perform the same function. Just make sure the bristles are soft so they don't damage the wood.

    • 2). Wipe stains from wood paneling as soon as you see them to prevent the wood paneling from darkening. Areas around light switches and doors may accumulate fingerprints. Buff away stains with a microfiber cloth.

    • 3). Use a commercial wood cleaner to preserve wood paneling and to give it a shine. Select a product specifically designed for the type of wood paneling you have. Test it in an out-of-the-way spot to make sure it's going to clean and not strip the protective coating from the wood paneling. Avoid using this type of cleaning solution on anything that doesn't have a varnish layer to protect the wood.

    • 4). Mix your own 1:16 ratio cleaning solution with dish detergent and warm water. Test a small spot first. Wipe the solution on and quickly rinse it off. Do not allow the liquid to soak into the wood especially if the wood has cracks or shows signs of deterioration.

    • 5). Polish your wood paneling with an oil soap and water mixture. Apply the oil soap and water and then buff the surface with a dry cloth. Wipe with the grain to avoid streaks and hazing. The oil in the soap acts to seal any tiny cracks in the protective coating. Use a mixture of four tablespoons vinegar, two tablespoons of olive oil to each pint of warm water. Apply the mixture with a sponge and remove it with a dry cloth.
