How to Replace Metal Window Screens
- 1). Remove the existing metal screen from the outside of the window. On metal-framed screens, a spring mechanism holds the screen in place with tension. Release the tension to pop the screen out by pressing on the spring mechanisms, usually located on top and bottom of the screen, or on each side.
- 2). Using pliers and utility shears, pull the existing screen from the frame, cutting as necessary for your convenience.
- 3). Measure the screen frame. Add two inches to each side. Cut new screen using the utility shears to the expanded dimensions.
- 4). Lay the screen frame on a large flat surface with the screen channel facing up. Lay the screen on the screen frame, distributing the overage evenly.
- 5). Work the screen into the screen channel on the frame using the screen roller. Start with the top, then complete the bottom, then work on the sides one at a time. Keep the screen held taut while working it into the four channels.
- 6). Use the screen roller to work the spline into the screen channel to secure the screen, starting at the top corner and working around the screen in order. Spline, a rubber or vinyl product made in width sizes specifically for wedging into screen channels and securing the screen, is available on spools at hardware stores.
- 7). Trim the spline after rolling it into all four channels as needed. Trim excess screen using the utility shears.
- 8). Re-install the screen into the window frame. Press the spring mechanisms, place the screen, and release the mechanisms to secure.
