Choosing Cost-Efficient Replacement Windows

    • 1). Choose the basic style of window that you want, such as casement or double-hung. Get at least three estimates on each type of window that you can use in the style that you want, including double-pane windows and windows with low-E coatings. Ask each contractor about any deals or specials that he is running.

    • 2). Compare the price of the windows and installation costs. Take into consideration any discounts or specials the contractor mentioned. Write down the cost of the least-expensive windows, including installation and specials.

    • 3). Look at the Energy Star rating on each type of window. Review the information regarding annual savings. Estimate how many years you think you will keep the windows. Most people keep their windows for at least 15 years. Multiply the number of years you think you will have the windows by the estimated annual savings. This is the estimated savings during the lifetime of the windows.

    • 4). Subtract the estimated savings, due to energy efficiency, for the lifetime of the windows from the estimate, including installation costs, that you received from the contractor you chose. The windows that cost the least are the most cost-efficient option.
