- 1). Check for warping. If your patio door exits onto an uncovered patio, your door might have warped over time, causing it to fit improperly in the frame. Warping is when a material such as wood expands or contracts when exposed to elements like heat or water. If your door has warped, it would fit tighter in the door frame than it previously had, which could cause it not to open at all.
- 2). Realign your sliding patio door on its track. The bottoms and tops of sliding patio doors are on a track that guides the door as it opens and shuts. If your door has come off the track, this could cause it not to open. Likewise, if part of your door is on the track and part of it isn't, this could cause the door to get stuck in place. Get your door back on its track, and try to open it again.
- 3). Remove any obstructions from the track of a sliding patio door. If something like a rock or tree twig has wedged itself in between the sliding patio door and the track, this could cause the door to jam shut and not be able to open. Clear the track of any small objects such as rocks, acorns, tree twigs and anything else that might have wedged itself inside, and try to open your door again.
- 4). Clean the rollers on the top and bottom of your sliding patio door. The rollers are the small, wheel-like objects that help guide your patio door as it moves. If these rollers have become dirty over time, this could cause opening the door to become more difficult until it finally won't open at all.
