Installing Pre-finished Oak Trim
- 1). Scrub the walls or cabinets gently with ammonia-based cleaner to remove grease and residue. Kitchen oils and other dirt will interfere with the adhesive.
- 2). Measure the length of one wall or cabinet for crown molding or base boards. Use a circular saw or miter saw to cut the trim at a 45-degree angle to accommodate the corner.
- 3). Place construction adhesive along the back of the trim piece. Press the crown molding or base board into place. Hold the piece in place with one hand. Use a nail gun to secure the trim with finish nails.
- 4). Cut a corresponding piece of trim at 45-degree angle to meet the first piece of trim. Install the second piece using the same technique you used for the first. Repeat around the room or cabinet.
- 5). Measure the bottom of the cabinets for oak trim. Cut a piece of trim with a 45-degree angle, pointing outward on each side of the cabinet. Cut a corresponding piece to meet at the corner. Trim the side that will meet the wall at a 90-degree angle.
- 6). Install the cabinet trim the same way you installed the crown and the baseboards. Glue the trim in place and secure with finish nails.
- 7). Repeat for each section of the cupboard you are updating. Fill all nail holes with wood putty. Touch up the stain or paint around the wood putty with a small brush.
