How to Build Cedar Shutters
- 1). Measure the height of the window on the outside of the house. Mark that same measurement on the 1-by-6-inch cedar board. Cut four pieces of the cedar with an electric miter saw. A miter saw is the best way to ensure the ends of each piece of lumber are straight, which is imperative because the "pickets" of shutters are so close together.
- 2). Place the four pieces next to each other with their long edges touching and measure the width of the four pieces. Cut two pieces that length from the 1-by-4-inch cedar board. These are the cross pieces for the shutter.
- 3). Make a mark at 7 inches and at 10½ inches from the ends of each of the 1-by-6-inch pieces of cedar. Place a framing square on the marks and draw lines across the width of each piece. Apply glue to the 1-by-6-inch pieces between the lines.
- 4). Align the 1-by-6-inch pieces so the ends are even. Place the cross pieces on the glue, aligning them with the lines drawn in Step 3.
- 5). Secure the cross pieces to the 1-by-6-inch pieces with 1-inch drywall screws. Countersink the heads no more than ¼ inch.
- 6). Repeat Steps 2 to 5 for each of the shutters of the same length. Be certain to measure the widths of each shutter because they may differ enough to make the cross pieces different lengths.
