Using a Miter Box for Cutting Crown Molding
- 1). Place a miter box on a flat, level work surface. Attach the box to the table with C-clamps to prevent it from moving around while you saw. Some miter boxes come with clamps or bolts already attached.
- 2). Measure the wall to determine the length for the crown molding. Mark the back of the crown molding where it should be cut. Determine your cut according to the inside or outside corner where the molding will meet.
- 3). Place the crown molding in the miter box so the flat bottom edge of the molding -- the wall edge -- is at the back of the miter box, which is the side of the miter box farthest away from you. The crown molding's flat ceiling edge should rest on the bottom of the miter box. Line the pencil mark up with the angled notch that will allow the cut molding to fit correctly on the wall. Tighten the clamp that holds the molding in place.
- 4). Place the saw in the appropriate notch for the angled cut you need. Start with the saw at the back of the miter box. Draw the saw toward you to make the first cut. Use a steady back and forth motion to cut the crown molding all the way through.
- 5). Release the clamp that secures the crown molding in the miter box. Repeat Steps 2 through 4 to cut all pieces of crown molding.
