How to Make an Island Using Base Cabinets

    • 1). Measure your floor and determine the amount of space available for an island. This will tell you how many cabinets you can use.

    • 2). Select a layout. Islands can be two cabinets back-to-back, include four cabinets with a space between pairs, or any other configuration you like. Order a counter top slightly larger than your island.

    • 3). Clamp and screw the cabinets together. Place them into position to check the fit. Adjust as necessary. Add shims to the gap between the cabinets.

    • 4). Build a 2 by 4 frame to fit the interior cabinet base at the bottom of the cabinets. Drill pilot holes and screw the frame to the floor. Position the cabinets over the frame, level and shim the cabinets, then drill pilot holes in both cabinets and frame. Use screws to fix the island into position. If you are planning a rolling island, attach the frame to the cabinet and the casters to the frame.

    • 5). Place cabinet skin on the unfinished back and sides of the cabinets. Measure and cut the skin to fit before gluing and nailing the skin to the cabinets. Nail the outside corner molding to the skin.

    • 6). Spread a thin bead of silicone along the top of the cabinets and place the counter top. Add a toe kick and trim to the base of a fixed island for a finished look.
