- 1). Look at the room you are insulating and determine what surfaces need insulation. Roofs, walls and floors have different requirements.
- 2). Choose an R-value of the cellulose that matches the surface being insulated: walls, floors or roofs. The R-value represents the material's heat conduction resistance. Use a manufacturer's guide, building inspector's evaluation or a guide offered at Lowes.com that reviews the zone and R-Value that is appropriate for each zone.
Note the geographical region the structure is located in will also affect the R-value required. Insulation needs are broken down in the United States based on geographical zones. There are six zones, with the coldest being the first zones, requiring different insulation than the warmest zones such as Hawaii. - 3). Calculate how much cellulose insulation you will need. This is represented by pounds per cubed foot, so measure the length and width of the room you are insulating and multiply this figure by the depth of insulation you desire, usually between 6 and 12 inches. Depending on the insulation requirements, you will need 1.8 to 3.5 pounds per cubic foot of insulation. The formula is: Pounds of Insulation = pounds/foot (length*width*depth).
- 4). Buy the amount of cellulose determined in Step 3 to meet the requirements of the R-value determined in Step 2. Most home improvement stores will be able to fill your order.
