Instructions for Loading a Quilt on a Long-Arm Machine

    • 1). Measure the backing material to find the half-point and mark it on both ends of the fabric by creasing it or using a disappearing ink marker. Turn the backing fabric so that the wrong side faces up. Hold the fabric at the marked middle point.

    • 2). Line the backing fabric half-point up with the half-point on the quilting machine's take-up roller. Pin the backing fabric to the take-up roller's fabric at the half-points. Pin the rest of the fabric edge, starting from the center, to the roller's fabric, ensuring that the pinning secures the points of the corners and that the pins are very close together.

    • 3). Rotate the roller, rolling the backing fabric around it and making the right side of the fabric visible until a small portion of the fabric hangs loose.

    • 4). Line up the visible half-point with the half-point on the inside of the opposite roller canvas and repeat the pinning process, securing the fabric to the rollers.

    • 5). Rotate the opposite roller, rolling the backing fabric around it and making the wrong side of the fabric visible until the pins on the other roller are unrolled.

    • 6). Tighten the roller on the side where the pins are showing. Spray the fabric with quilt basting spray and apply the quilt batting to the fabric, smoothing it out thoroughly.

    • 7). Place the quilt top on the batting a few inches from the top, making sure that the batting and backing are longer than the quilt at the sides and top. Fold the quilt top back on top of itself and spray the basting spray on the back side of the quilt top, smoothing it onto the batting.

    • 8). Spray a generous amount of basting spray along the edges of the quilt to secure the quilt top to the batting. Load the machine with the thread you will be using to stitch the backing, batting and quilt top together.

    • 9). Align the needle of your machine with the center point along the top edge of your quilt. Stitch the top edge, 1/8 inch from the fabric's edge, from the center point to the left corner, using your hand to keep the fabric flat. Repeat from the center point to the right corner. Stitch the left, bottom and right sides in the same fashion.
