How to Install a New Kitchen
- 1). Establish the layout. Determine where the gas, electric and water lines are located in order to determine where appliances will go. Take note of the location for each appliance as well as the desired appliance size.
- 2). Measure the cabinet sizes. Begin in the corners of the room and work your way toward the center of the walls. Corner cabinets are a crucial starting point because they come in the fewest size options. Establish the sink base cabinet by determining the sink size you desire.
- 3). Finish determining base cabinet sizes. Calculate the sizes for base cabinets and fillers first; then, continue to calculate the size of the wall-hung cabinets. Wall cabinets will typically be the more shallow than the base cabinet or the same size as the appliance it is placed over.
- 4). Install the cabinets. Begin by installing the base cabinets. Make sure to leave the correct spacing for appliances. Determine the height of the wall-hung cabinets by using the height of the refrigerator as a guide. Place the wall cabinet over the refrigerator height, and line the remaining cabinets on the remaining walls.
- 5). Install the countertop. The countertop will be placed on top of the base cabinets to create a flat work surface for your kitchen. When you install the countertop, it is recommended to install the sink as well. The sink space will need to be cut out of the counter top and sealed properly once the sink is in place.
- 6). Paint the room. Painting the room at this point is important so you can avoid accidentally spilling on a brand new floor. Use a high-gloss finish, which is recommended for kitchens because it may be easily cleaned.
- 7). Install the flooring. It is important to install the flooring before you hook up the appliances. The flooring will be placed under the appliances so they can easily be removed for cleaning or replaced. The floor installation may take one or two days, depending on the material you choose. Vinyl tiles take less than a day to install; however, ceramic tiles take between 24 and 48 hours to dry.
- 8). Install the appliances. The appliances can easily be slid into their space at this point and then connected for use.
- 9). Finish the kitchen with details. Add cooking or eating utensils to the cabinets and wall decor and countertop appliances.
