The Best Lighthouse Pictures
- Time-lapse images are pictures of the same scene taken at different intervals. When done correctly with lighthouses, you can create an image that captures the lighthouse's beam radiating in different directions. Not only is this image dramatic, but it also illustrates exactly what a lighthouse does.
- Depending on what coast you are shooting on, a lighthouse is perfectly positioned to be illuminated by early morning or late-day sun. This time of day is referred to as the golden hour, and it is the time when the sun is low in the sky, creating a very warm glow and long shadows. This natural light coupled with the lighthouse beam makes for a pleasing image.
- Lighthouses are some of the oldest structures in the country. Creating a high-dynamic-range picture --- in which you take several images of the same subject at different exposures, then layer the images in postproduction --- produces an image that captures a greater range of detail in both highlights and shadows of the lighthouse. Adding some color tinting can further enhance the finished picture.
- Just as lighthouses are positioned to see the first or last light of each day, they are also in ideal locations when weather rolls in off the water. These pictures can capture the romantic side of lighthouses blanketed in fog or standing strong in driving rain. If the lighthouse is positioned very close to the edge of the ocean, you may be able to photograph it as waves crash into it. Using a slower shutter speed will create a picture with cascading waves as they crash and subside; a fast shutter speed will capture the fury of the water.
