Directions for Making Beaded Jewelry

    • 1). Measure the string that will be used as the primary necklace. Wrap it around the neck and make adjustments as necessary. If the necklace needs to be short, tighten the string. If it needs to be longer, let more string loose.

    • 2). Add at least one extra inch to the final measurement of the string for the necklace locks to be attached. Cut the string with scissors or pliers, depending on the type of stringing material.

    • 3). Organize the beads that will go on the piece. While some organize them into a pattern, others enjoy the spontaneous look of randomly placed beads. Do not choose beads that may clash in color and structure.

    • 4). Separate the round beads from the hanging beads. While some are round with a hole through them, other beads are attached to a metal loop, also called loop beads. These are pre-made attachments and can be found in most craft stores.

    • 5). Place the beads out on the table in the order they will appear on the necklace. For example, one pattern could be five rounded beads, one loop bead, five rounded beads, followed by one loop bead. However, the design is personal and may also depend on the sizes and structures of the beads. Design the order of beads as it suits the person who will be wearing it.

    • 6). Take one end of the string and attach one side of the lock. This is most commonly done by pulling the string through the loop in the lock and tying a tight knot. Cut the loose ends of the knot. Put the lock end down on the table and grab a hold of the opposite end.

    • 7). Start sliding the beads onto the string, pushing them back toward the lock on the necklace string. Continue until all of the beads are on the string and covers the string completely.

    • 8). Hold the necklace up in the air at the end with no lock. As the beads are heavy, they will fall down, leaving more string at the top. Attach the other end of the lock while in this position, as the necklace will become tighter. Use the same method of tying a knot through the lock loop, and cut the loose ends of the knot. If the lock is attached while sitting down, string would immediately show as soon as the necklace is put on.
