DIY Interior Doors
- 1). Position the door unit and its surrounding casing in the opening, with the door shut. Remember that the door will open toward the side where the hinge pins are visible.
- 2). Set your level along one side of the door unit's inner casing. Slide shims between the casing and the surrounding frame in the wall. Shim until the level reads plumb (straight up and down) at both sides and level across the top.
- 3). Open the door so you can get at the casing. Shoot screws through the casing on the vertical sides, so they grip the frame in the surrounding wall. Butt the screws about every foot, in two rows, each one about an inch from the edge of the casing. Sink the screw heads.
- 4). Cut off the portions of the shims that overhang the edge of the doorway, using your razor knife.
- 5). Remove the middle screw from each hinge, using a screw gun. The screws will be short, because they can only go as far as the thickness of the casing. Replace them with 2 1/2-inch screws, driving them into the same holes and into the surrounding frame.
