How to Make Wooden House Shutters
- 1). Measure the top, bottom and the height of both sides of the window opening.
- 2). Transfer the window measurements to a sheet of exterior grade 5/8-inch plywood. Draw an outline of the opening using a pencil and a straightedge.
- 3). Cut the plywood along the pencil lines using a circular saw.
- 4). Verify the plywood shutter fits by placing the wood in the window opening. Remove the shutter board. Trim as needed.
- 5). Screw eight barrel bolts to the outside edge of the shutter board with a drill. Use the screws included with the barrel bolts. Install the barrel bolts 8 inches from the top and bottom on both sides and 8 inches from the sides on the top and bottom. A barrel bolt has a flange that screws directly to the shutter and has a bolt with a handle that slides through the flange.
- 6). Hold the storm shutter against the window with the barrel bolts facing out. Mark the spot on the window recess where the barrel bolt line up. Remove the shutter.
- 7). Drill 1-inch deep holes at the spots marked on the window recess for the barrel bolt connections. Use a drill with a 1/4-inch masonry bit. Place a strip of masking tape 1 inch from the end of the masonry bit. Use the tape as a depth guide when drilling the holes.
- 8). Install the storm shutter to verify the holes line up with the barrel bolts. If a hole does not line up then move the barrel bolt. Remove the shutter.
- 9). Seal the shutters with a water-proofing sealer. Use a brush to apply the sealer to the front, back and all four edges. Set the shutters in the sun to dry.
