How to Decorate Oak Trim
- 1). Choose a color for your oak trim that provides contrast to your wall color. For example, white trim works well with dark wall colors like navy or crimson. A wood finish works well with lighter colors like sky blue or eggshell. Let your tastes guide you.
- 2). Clean the oak trim with a detergent and remove all surface oils and dirt. This helps the paint or stain adhere to the wood surface. Let dry.
- 3). Prepare the area around the oak trim for painting. Place painter's tape on either side of the oak trim to protect the area. Lay a drop cloth on the floor underneath the area to keep paint drippings off the floor.
- 4). Add a coat of water-based primer with a brush to the oak trim if you're choosing to paint instead of stain. Let the primer dry for the amount of time recommended by your specific brand.
- 5). Apply one coat of paint in the color of your choice to the oak trim. Use high-gloss latex paint for added shine. Apply a coat of wood stain using a rag if you choose this option.
- 6). Add any decorative embellishments to the wood trim if you desire, such as a detailed pattern along the edge.
