How to Refinish a Kitchen Countertop
- 1). Paint over old laminate countertops. Apply two coats of high gloss primer with a sponge roller. Allow to dry between coats. Follow with four coats of gloss latex paint.
- 2). Create a stone-like finish by using a stone spray paint. Start by wiping down all counters. Apply a base coat of latex paint in the same color as the stone finish spray. Allow to dry. Apply the stone spray paint, spraying back and forth in even strokes. When dry, spray a sealer as the top coat.
- 3). Tile over laminate by first deglossing the surface by either sanding it or applying a product called TSP, available at hardware stores. Screw in backer board to the countertops.
- 4). Trowel adhesive onto the countertop using the slotted side of the tool. Lay down the tiles, pressing gently. Put spacers in between each tile for an even layout.
- 5). Follow the instructions on the package when mixing the grout. Apply grout over the entire countertop, making sure to get in all the grooves.
- 6). Wipe the tiles with a damp cloth, removing the grout from the surface of the tiles. Allow to dry. Add a sealant to the grout lines to protect them.
