Simply put, a canopy is a type of cover that provides some degree of shade or shelter from the elements. Canopies allow you to enjoy the outdoors without getting a sunburn or being pelted with rain. While you can find outdoor canopies made out of a variety of materials, many are wood, which gives canopies a sturdy, yet romantic appearance. - An arbor is a type of wooden framework that creates a shaded path and usually consists of pillars and open latticework. Garden owners often encourage plants to grow on or around an arbor so the leaves of plants provide adequate shade. You can enhance this by adding more tree branches to the top of the arbor. This will create a structure that is both functional and which has an entirely bucolic appearance that blends and meshes well with nature.
- A portable canopy consists of a lightweight smooth, polished wood canopy with with an X-shaped wooden frame on either side of it that supports a piece of fabric above it. You can move this anywhere you want outside: near the edge of a pool, in the middle of a meadow, onto a beach or near a lake. The polished platform has ample room for spreading out with towels or pillows so you can snooze, read, talk and relax away from the glare of the sun.
- The French company Senses sells a canopy called Jinday: A wood canopy frame larger than a portable wooden canopy and substantially heavier. It consists of a large polished wooden platform with a frame that makes right angles to the platform. Around this frame you can romantically drape fabric for more coverage. Alternatively, you could nail planks of wood across the top to give you more coverage. Because this entire structure is so tall and so wide, you will have no trouble filling it with furniture like couches, chairs and tables to make it the perfect eating or lounging space.
