How to Cut Crown Molding by Hand
- 1). Set your miter box on a flat work surface. Clamp the miter box to the table with C-clamps.
- 2). Measure the wall where the crown molding will be installed. Keep in mind that the back of the crown will fit in this space.
- 3). Mark a spot on the back of the crown molding that corresponds to this measurement.
- 4). Set the crown molding into the miter box with the pencil mark lined up with the correct 45-degree angle. The direction of the angle will depend on the layout of your wall. Hold the trim piece in the miter box with a clamp.
- 5). Start at the back of the miter box and make your first pass of the saw from back to front. Saw with a slow and steady back-and-forth motion. Avoid going too fast as the blade will get stuck in the wood. Saw all the way through the trim.
- 6). Unlock the clamp. Repeat the process with the rest of the trim.
