How to Insulate a Wall After a Pipe Breaks
- 1). Put on clothing that covers your skin, a hat, gloves, face mask and goggles. This helps protect your skin and respiratory system from becoming irritated by the fiberglass in the insulation.
- 2). Press the insulation into the space between the wall studs, along the wall. Fit the insulation behind the water pipe, creating a barrier between the cold outside air and the pipe.
- 3). Cut any portions of the insulation that overlaps the wall studs, including on the top or bottom of the wall, using a utility knife. Shove the insulation into the edges where the insulation meets the wall studs, using a putty knife.
- 4). Separate the insulation in half by pulling apart the layers from the bottom of the insulation if you are applying insulation around electrical wiring in the wall as well. Place one-half of insulation behind the electrical wiring and the other half over the wiring.
- 5). Shove thin strips of insulation into the gaps around windows or doors, using the putty knife. Cut the insulation to fit around any electrical boxes, including outlets or light switches, using the utility knife.
