How to Replace a Damaged Floor Board
- 1). Bore through the damaged floor board using a spade bit in your drill. Make several bore holes in a row across the width of the board just below the damaged section. Don't drill so deeply that you hit the sub floor.
- 2). Split the damaged section board down the middle with a chisel. Use a pry bar to remove the damaged sections. You can use this method to remove an entire board or just a section that has been damaged. Square off the hole that remains after you remove the damaged section.
- 3). Measure the hole in the floor and cut a replacement board 1/32 inches longer than the old board. Hold the new board over the hole and test the fit. Use a sander to sand off a small section if the board is too long.
- 4). Flip the new board on to the reverse side. Chisel a slight groove along one edge so that the new board can fit over the tongue of the adjacent board.
- 5). Spread carpenter's glue over each end of the new board. Use a wood block and mallet to pound in the new board. If the board won't fit, sand a little more off one end and try again.
- 6). Drill pilot holes at the end of the new board. Use a hammer to pound finish nails through the pilot holes and sink the heads with a nail set. Wipe off any remaining glue from the floor. Cover the nail heads with wood putty and stain the board to match the other boards.
