- 1). Have at least a rough idea of the scope of your project. Are you remodeling an entire home or just one or two rooms? The size of your project will guide you in your search for a drafter.
- 2). Ask for a recommendation from the lumber company where you plan to purchase your materials. Some lumber companies have draftsmen on their staff that you can use free of charge, provided you purchase your lumber from that company. If they don't have a drafter on site, they can probably recommend someone.
- 3). Search the "Certified Professionals" section of the American Design and Drafting Association (ADDA). The ADDA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to drafting and design professionals. It offers certification exams as well as certification of educational programs for drafting and design. Drafters are usually graduates of a certified drafting program.
- 4). Look for the following letters after a drafter's name, indicating her certification as a drafter: CD, CDD, CDT, DIT. According to the ADDA, these certifications indicate "knowledge of professional concepts and internationally recognized standards and practices."
- 5). Hire a local drafter so you can easily check his references and, if possible, see his work. Call the references and ask if they were satisfied with the drafter's work. A good drafter will have years of experience drawing house plans, and several happy customers.
