- 1). Obtain a visa application extension form. It can be downloaded from the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration website. Paper copies can also be obtained from the local police stations. The application will require you to answer several questions regarding your passport and citizenship information.
- 2). Make sure your passport is valid for an extension. Your passport must be valid for at least six months after your planned extension. If you do not have six months left before your passport expires, then your application extension will be denied. If you need to say in the country and your passport does not meet the requirements, then you will have to file with the American Embassy an application for a new passport. This can be done in a fairly short amount of time--in some cases within 24 hours, and then you can complete the visa extension application.
- 3). Write your explanation of why you need a visa extension. You will have to produce a written document that states why you need an extension. This written document should also be followed up with documentation that back up your claim. Visa extensions can only be granted in cases where the reason for the stay has not changed but the trip has to be lengthened. This can be due to illness or the reason for coming was postponed or extended. Documentation that states such postponement, extension or illness will help you in the being granted a visa extension.
- 4). Provide proof of travel insurance. Travel insurance must show that it will be active through the extension period if the extension is granted.
- 5). Submit your application. The application along with your valid passport, written statement, documentation and proof of insurance must be submitted to the local police department. The police are authorized to extend some visas on their own, and the application has a possibility of being processed at the police station. However, if there is any doubt about whether you meet the visa extension requirements, they will forward your application the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration to process the application.
