- 1). Inspect your attic's soffit ventilation baffles to make sure they are long enough to extend past the new level of insulation. These baffles are installed where the soffit meets the roof and are typically wood or Styrofoam. They allow air to circulate through the soffit and into the attic space. This is important to remove moisture and maintain an attic temperature close to the outdoor temperature. If the ventilation baffles are not long enough, you need to extend them before adding the blown-in insulation.
- 2). Position the insulation blower so that the blower's tube can reach the entire attic space. If it is necessary to install it inside the home, protect the carpets and personal items from dust with painter's blankets. The blower produces a lot of dust.
- 3). Carry the blower tube to the farthest corner of the attic. Step only on the joists to avoid accidentally falling through the ceiling.
- 4). Turn on the insulation blower with the help of an assistant and begin filling the hopper with bags of loose-fill fiberglass.
- 5). Apply the fiberglass to the desired depth around the attic space. Begin by working around the outside edges and working your way back to the access hatch. This will avoid working your way into a corner.
- 6). Check the depth of the insulation with the ruler from time to time. If portions of the insulation are uneven, gently spread it around with the garden rake. Avoid compressing the insulation; this reduces its effectiveness.
