How to Install Fiberglass Insulation in a Crawl Space
- 1). Purchase unfaced fiberglass rolled insulation with either a R-11, R-19 or R-25 rating for the best thermal resistance.
- 2). Cut narrow pieces using a metal ruler and utility knife. Tuck them into the band joist. Cut the batting slightly larger than the width of the band joist so friction will hold the insulation in place.
- 3). Cut lengths of batting to cover the walls. To calculate the total length, measure from the wood plate that runs along the top of the concrete foundation wall down to the floor. It's recommended that a minimum of two feet be added on so the insulation is carried out onto the floor of the crawlspace.
- 4). Position the first strip of fiberglass batting and every one thereafter so the top edge rests against the wood plate at the top concrete wall. Take a furring strip with the nails already driven through and push the nails through the batting. Hammer the nails only part way into the wood plate, taking care not to overly compress the insulation.
- 5). Earthen floor crawl spaces should have a vapor barrier. Purchase a sufficient amount of 6-mil polyethylene plastic to cover the floor with 12 inch overlaps which are taped. It's recommended that the polyethylene run at least 6 inches up the crawlspace wall under the fiberglass batting.
- 6). For each strip of insulation, gently lay a rock or brick on top of the batting lying on the floor to anchor it in place.
