    • 1). Calculate how much energy your home uses on a monthly basis. This information can be found on your electric bill. Before installing a solar heating system, add an additional 25 percent to the monthly total so that the system will be able to power the home effectively.

    • 2). Buy the solar panels for your home. Each solar panel should produce a minimum of 250 watts, according to the Solar Expert website. Determine the number of panels that you will need by the size of the home and the amount of energy that must be supplied.

    • 3). Align the rail mounting system that comes with the panels with the southwest side of the roof where there is no shade. It must be installed first.

    • 4). Use a power drill and screws to secure the rail mounting system to the roof of the home. The rail mounting system and the solar panels must be installed at an angle in order to accommodate the slope of the roof. Install a power inverter so that the solar energy can be used to supply energy to the various components within the home.

    • 5). Connect the solar panels to the inverter before running the power supply to the electrical breaker box. The inverter converts direct currents from the solar panels into currents that are used by the home. The Energy Savers website explains that a solar powered water heater can also be installed in a home following the installation of the solar panels.

    • 6). Consider purchasing a battery pack or a generator so that the house will still have energy and heating on cloudy days when solar energy cannot be collected.
