How to Build a Small Simple Deck

    • 1). Determine the level at which the deck will connect to the home. This is generally directly below the threshold of a door.

    • 2). Locate where you want the corners of your small deck to be placed. Set concrete support blocks at each of these corners.

    • 3). Build a perimeter frame the size of the planned deck out of 2-inch by 6-inch treated lumber. Mark out positions for the interior framework pieces every 16 inches along both of the long sides of the deck. Place 2-inch by 6-inch treated boards between the marked positions on the framework. Use 3-1/2-inch galvanized deck screws to fasten the cross-members to the perimeter frame.

    • 4). Fasten the framework to the wall at the level you determined in Step 1. Use 3-1/2-inch galvanized deck screws to fasten the deck frame in place.

    • 5). Place a 4-inch by 4-inch post on top of the concrete support blocks at the corner of the deck frame. Fit it into the corner formed by the perimeter frame. The post should not extend above the top of the framework. Fasten the framework to the post using 3-1/2-inch galvanized deck screws.

    • 6). Sheath the deck frame with 5/4-inch treated decking. These boards are just over an inch thick and come in 4-inch or 6-inch widths. The decking is placed perpendicular to the internal framework of the deck frame. Fasten the deck boards in place with two 2-1/2-inch galvanized deck screws at each support frame piece. Space each board approximately 1/2 inch from the adjacent board.
