How to Obtain a British Passport for a Canadian
- 1). Complete the Application for a First Passport online (see Resources). Submit the application to the Home Office; it will then print a hard copy of the document and send it to you to sign.
- 2). Sign and return the application form, enclosing a check for the specified fee. Enclose your current passport (the one with which you entered the U.K.), your birth certificate and, if you are claiming citizenship based on your parents' heritage, a copy of your father's birth certificate and your parents' marriage license. Send two 2-inch square passport photos that have been signed by someone in a position of authority who has known you for at least two years. Her information will go in Section 10 of the application.
- 3). Make an appointment with the Home Office to hold an interview regarding your application.
- 4). Attend your interview. There is no "fast track" option for first-time passport applicants, so expect the entire application process to take about six weeks. The interview takes about half an hour and is intended to reduce the number of people trying to steal individuals' identities through passport fraud. If your application is approved, you may return at a specified date to collect your new passport.
