How to Make a Shelf Out of a Pallet
- 1). Select a standard reversible pallet or other type of wooden pallet that has wood horizontally secured on both the front and back sides; the front and back sides are known as the deckboards.(Ref 3) Place the pallet on the ground outside on a flat surface. Hose the pallet down with water to remove any dirt and grime. Wipe down stubborn, set-in dirt with a wet rag. Let your pallet dry completely.
- 2). Cut the pallet between the deckboards with your hand saw approximately 12 to 15 inches from one of the open ends. Cut between two of the individual boards so that the pallet is cut off straight and even. This will result in two pallet pieces; set the larger piece aside. The smaller piece will be long rectangle with two solid short pieces on each side; the top and the bottom will be open. A center wooden beam will run vertically up and down your shelf rectangle.
- 3). Sand the rough edges and corners of the cut-off pallet piece so that it is smooth and free of splinters.
- 4). Determine which long end of the rectangle will be the bottom side of your shelf. Measure the length and width of each of the open channels on either side of the vertical support beam on the bottom side of the shelf. Either cut 1 x 4 pieces of wood to these measurements with your hand saw or have them cut to size at your home improvement store.
- 5). Place your 1 x 4 wood pieces in the open channels. Drill pilot holes for the screws in the front and back of each side of the shelf. Drill the screws through the shelf into the wood pieces until they are securely in place.
- 6). Paint or stain your shelf if you desire. Fill in your screw holes with wood filler and let dry. Apply your paint or stain according to the manufacturer's directions. For a rustic look, sand the paint or stain after application. Hang your shelf by screwing the back wood support directly into a stud support in your wall.
