Who Uses Hydrogen Power?
- The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has created a wind-hydrogen plant that produces electricity. Hydrogen plants are versatile structures that can be combined with solar and wind farms to increase their energy output. These plants can use hydrogen for energy.
- Hydrogen fuel cells can be used for powering homes or automobiles. Manufacturing fuel cells to power residences and buildings is expensive, but smaller hydrogen fuel cells are used for emergency power to structures and to power small electronic devices.
- Vehicles such as public buses and some automobiles use a liquid or gas form of hydrogen within a combustion-based engine that powers the automobile. Hydrogen is converted into electricity by the use of a fuel cell.
- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) uses hydrogen power as a part of its rocket fuel for space shuttles. NASA is currently still developing hydrogen power for powering space stations, providing life support systems, and for self-containing fuel generation.
- The military industry uses hydrogen-based fuel cells to power its equipment and vehicles. The cells are lighter, less expensive, and more powerful than traditional batteries.
