    • 1). Examine your thoughts. If you feel low, you are probably focusing on what you don't want in your life. You may have experienced a physical or emotional trauma that is affecting your present behavior. While trying to avoid any future trauma, you are focusing on the negative aspects of the previous experience. Your mind takes that focus and recreates another negative situation. Instead, direct your focus toward what you want to achieve in your life. For example, if you have been injured in an automobile accident, focus on the physiotherapy that will help you improve your mobility. A romantic breakup can also trigger negative thoughts about future relationships. Take time to grieve the breakup and then jump start your social life by joining new clubs and organizations.

    • 2). Accept your present situation. You may feel stuck in a dead-end job or relationship. Alternatively, you may be dealing with illness or financial problems. When you complain and resist your situation, you may experience more emotional and physical suffering. Instead, surrender and work to change the situation. For example, accept the fact that your job provides little, if any, joy and fulfillment. Focus on your evenings and weekends. You can fill those times with more meaningful activities, courses, workshops, volunteer involvement, that can lead to a happier and more rewarding life experience.

    • 3). Take full responsibility for your life. It is easy to blame other people for your failures or expect them to be your safety net. For example, you may feel resentful toward a supervisor who recommended another colleague for a promotion. Instead of bad-mouthing the supervisor or the colleague, sit down with a mentor or trusted friend and ask for her honest opinion regarding your attitude and work performance. Heed her suggestions and make the necessary changes. Once you realize that you are 100 percent responsible for your life, you will be empowered to change it.

    • 4). Surround yourself with supportive people. As you improve the circumstances of your life, you may find that some friends and family members feel uncomfortable or threatened. They may be content with the status quo and do not want to see you make progress. Distance yourself from any overly negative or critical people who belittle your dreams and aspirations. Instead, find role models who have already achieved the goals you seek. When you associate with successful people, you think more positively and feel inspired to act decisively.
