Best Practices for Keeping Skin Beautiful

    • If you've been blessed with relatively good skin, suffering only an occasional breakout now and then, then a simple three-step facial routine is all you need to keep your skin at peak performance.

Step 1: Provide a sterile environment for routine skin cleansing. Wash your hands before you wash your face, so you don't transfer germs from your hands to your face. Use a clean cloth or, even better, use disposable facial-size cotton pads to prevent contamination from germs that might remain within the fibers of a used washcloth, especially one previously used to wash the body.

Step 2: Use a mild soap, preferably one that doesn't contain harsh ingredients from sodium derivatives that can dry and irritate skin. Rinse thoroughly several times with warm water. Dry with a clean cloth and apply a light, noncomedogenic moisturizer that won't clog pores.

Step 3: When a nasty pimple does rear its head, it's almost impossible to resist the temptation to release the pressure and corruption visible in a whitehead or the hardened core of a blackhead. If you must burst a pimple, follow the sterile procedures you already practice, only more so.

Hands should be super clean. Use a new, clean facial tissue each time you touch the pimple. Never use your hands directly, and definitely never use your fingernails. Gently squeeze the pimple using the facial tissue, bringing pressure on its pore eruption point until a little bleeding is evident. Clean the surface with a mild astringent like witch hazel. Do not use peroxide, which can kill healthy skin cells and cause permanent scarring.

To remove a blackhead, first apply a hot towel to the area for several minutes to loosen its core. Using a tissue, gently squeeze the pimple in a gentle back and forth motion. Do not prolong squeezing if the blackhead resists removal. A series of hot compresses over several hours may be needed to loosen a deeply embedded blackhead. Once removed, clean with witch hazel and air dry.

Refrain from resting your face in your hands when tired or bored to prevent the spread of germs to the face. Get into the habit of cleaning the surface of telephones with disinfecting wipes often to prevent transfer of germs from hand-held devices that come in contact with facial skin.
