The constant battle between the Sega Genesis and the Super Nintendo had revolutionized the gaming industry at a level that was never seen before. The constant need to improve and deliver the next major innovative break-through to enhance the gaming experience of the user enabled gaming fans all over the world to enjoy video gaming at a whole new level.
During the 1980's, the video game industry was going through a crisis, particularly during the Great Video Game Crash of 1983. The NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) brought the spark back into the industry with its revolutionary gaming consoles.
Pretty soon, a new Japanese video game corporation by the name of Sega came into the market to compete with Nintendo in the video game industry. This started the ‘Bit Wars' in the 90's, as Sega introduced its new 16 bit console to compete with the Super Nintendo, which was a phenomenal success on its release.
Soon enough, comparisons were being made between the masses as to which console was better. Sega Genesis had finally arrived on to the gaming scene and had blown the Super Nintendo out of the water, some would say. Its Mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog, was a massive hit and was being compared with Nintendo's very own Super Mario.
Nintendo still managed to sell more then 49 million units of its Super Nintendo worldwide, compared to the 40 million units that Sega Genesis managed during that time. This figure shows that Nintendo clearly had a winner with its console but Sega had definitely made its mark on the industry as well.
At that time, Sega and Nintendo were the giants in the video game market and nobody would deny that fact. Countless video gamers were divided when it came to deciding which gaming console was the best, yet could not make headway.
It has been that way for the past 20 years, and the debate apparently never gets old among gaming aficionados. They do agree on the fact that Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo transformed gaming in the 80's and 90's.
