    • 1). Read the instructions that come with your electronic muscle stimulator carefully, as not all electronic muscle stimulators work exactly the same way. Keep in mind any advice your doctor has given, and do not adjust the settings on your device unless your doctor tells you to.

    • 2). Clean the area you intend on applying an electrode over with gentle soap and warm water.

    • 3). Dry the skin with a towel.

    • 4). Insert AA batteries into the EMS device's battery compartment. Make sure to line up the positive and negative terminals of the battery to the positive and negative signs imprinted inside the battery's compartment.

    • 5). Place the lead wires of the device into the lead wire socket on top of the EMS device.

    • 6). Open the package containing the electrodes and insert the lead wire pins into the pig tail of the electrodes.

    • 7). Rub a conductivity gel onto the electrodes pads, if your doctor recommends it. Many specialists advise using a conductivity gel to maximize the effectiveness of EMS therapy. Use 1/4 teaspoon of gel on electrode pads, rubbing the gel in with your fingers.

    • 8). Apply the electrodes to the area your doctor has advised. Make sure that your electronic muscle stimulator is off while applying the electrodes.

    • 9). Turn on your electronic muscle stimulator. Do not adjust the settings unless directed by your doctor; most doctors prefer to do this themselves, as patients may turn the electronic impulses up too high. If your doctor has told you which setting to set the device to and did not set it himself, turn the device onto the mode and settings your doctor suggested.

Run the EMS device for the period of time your doctor recommended. Typically, the devices are used for a minimum of 20 minutes in order to be effective. Sometimes, for postoperative cases, a doctor monitors a patient's use of the device for hours at a time, up to 36 hours.
