Fly Fishing Rods Selecting Tips

As we all know in fly fishing artificial flies to catch fish. And not to mention the fly is almost weightless therefore requiring a good amount of practice to cast with it. It all sure seems easy from a distance to attach a fly to the line and then cast in the water. But ask any fly fishing fisherman, they will tell you what it takes to master the ‘art' of fly fishing. You definitely need a lot of practice, the right kinds of fishing tackles and lot of patience. Here are tips that you can refer to before buying that a fly fishing rod.

The first thing that you should be keeping in mind is what kind of fish you want to fish for; this will determine the type of fishing line to use. The rod size must match the weight of the line and vice versa. For example for a small mouth bass you would need number 6 or 7. If you are targeting salmon, steelhead, you will need 7-10 weights line. An 11- 15 weight line is required if an ocean fish is your target.

The kind of water in which you plan to fish also has to be considered before you but the fly fishing rod. If you are headed towards a creek or a stream, you will need the shortest rod size- a 6 feet long rod! For fishing in the bays or lakes, get yourself a 16 feet long rod that will help you reach greater distances.

It is hard to believe but it is true that there are different rods for fly fishing beginners and active master anglers. For a seasoned fly fisherman, a type of rod that that is able to bend near the tip is required so that he can zing the fly across the surface of the water – in one word – a high action rod. A beginner will find a slow action rod easier to use as the rod bends closer to the rod butt.  But even then they prefer to use a high action rod, which offers accuracy.

It is important to check the quality of the construction of a fly fishing rod. Higher the graphite content, better the quality of the rod and thus fishing tacklemanufacturers all around the world are working to improve the quality of the rod by balancing the right type and the right amount of graphite.

The local conditions are also an important factor that tells you what kind of rods to use. The easiest way to do so is to find out what other fly fishermen normally use when they go out to fish. Again, many of us assume that since it is the first rod, let us but a cheap one and then after we have mastered it, we can go ahead and buy the more expensive one. The best thing to do is to purchase middle-of- the range fly rod but by a well known maker.
