How to Brake Skillfully
- 1). Make a slow, steady application of the brakes when coming to an intersection or a turn to give the driver behind you a clear notice that you are coming to a stop. Stomping on the brakes at the last minute at every intersection puts a lot of wear and tear on your brakes and does not give the driver behind you enough reaction time.
- 2). Pump the brakes or pulse your foot on the brake pedal if you are coming to a quick hard stop in a car that does not have anti-lock brakes (ABS.) This will keep the car from locking up and will allow you to steer if needed.
- 3). Take a little bit of pressure off the brake pedal if your brakes seize up in a non-ABS equipped car. When you feel the brakes become responsive again, then reapply more pressure.
- 4). Jam your foot on the brakes and keep it there if you are in an ABS equipped car, even if the car shudders. The ABS system automatically pulses on the brakes if the sensors see the brakes are seizing up.
- 5). Take your foot off the gas first if you feel you are sliding in snow or hydroplaning on a wet road before placing your foot on the brakes. Slamming on the brakes when you are in a slide will make you unable to steer and less able to control of the car.
