How to Have a Successful Road Trip
- 1). Meticulously plan the driving route from door to destination. Use a map or better yet a GPS system and pay special attention to turns and road changes. Plan out approximate times and points in the trip for gas stops and bathroom breaks. Decide who will drive at which points in the trip if there are multiple drivers.
- 2). Take the vehicle for a checkup. Have the car checked and tuned for all of the important things like engine, oil, coolant and tires to be sure that it will be able to make the entire road trip without problems.
- 3). Pack enough snacks to last the whole trip. Choose nonperishable items and plenty of water and beverages, nonalcoholic of course.
- 4). Bring entertainment for the passengers. Choose a variety of activities that the passengers, whether adult or child, can enjoy, like magazines, coloring books, portable DVD player, laptop computer, travel board games or books.
- 5). Pack the car in the most compact way possible to provide leg room and space for the passengers and driver. Put bags in the truck and under the seat if necessary. Avoid putting bags under passengers' legs or feet or on top of the seats. Enough space to be comfortable is essential, especially for long road trips.
- 6). Be prepared for anything. Keep a first aid kit handy, emergency numbers programmed in your cellphone and a flexible attitude towards unplanned events. Even a well-planned road trip can veer off course for reasons outside of your control like traffic, road closures, weather or mechanical problems.
